Jeff Long speaks to Supplement Judge

For this interview, Supplement Judge is very lucky and privileged to speak to Ronnie Coleman Signature Series‘s sponsored athlete Jeff Long. In this interview we see what it takes to become a top class bodybuilder!

JeffLong-MD-Bernal-505Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

I grew up in New jersey as an inspiring bodybuilder as the age of 10. As a young kid I was always into sports like baseball football etc… but I decided to do neither of them . I decided to wrestle and the reason is I never liked the idea of relying on other people help me win or do anything . I’m the type to learn and do it on my own and if I fail I get up and try again.. wrestling for me was an individual sport and the only person I could count on was myself. I believe being a wrestler helped me grow into a bodybuilder because of the discipline and having to stick to a strict diet to make weight every week.  Fast forward to 2013 I am an IFBB Pro bodybuilder . I am Happily married to my wife who is my best friend and I have a successful business out side of bodybuilding..

How long have you been training for?

I have been training for about 15 years now.

How did you get started in training?

My dad got me into training. He wasn’t a bodybuilder but he worked out every day. I told him after I saw pumping iron i wanted to look like those guys in the movie .I believe it was the next day He brought me downstairs and showed me a few exercises..

Who got you motivated to start training?

The classic movie pumping Iron motivated me after I sat down with my dad at the age of 10 and watched it.

What are your short and long term fitness goals?

Short term goal is to win my first IFBB pro show in 2014. Long term goal is to be one of the top Bodybuilders in the world which means gunning for an olympia title . Im only 29 so I have plenty of time to get there.

What workout routine has worked best for you?

To be honest I don’t get too fancy with my training. I stick to the basic compound movements and trying very hard and intense with lots of volume.

athlete_8x10Could you outline your basic daily diet?

I eat 6 meals per day plus one shake. As of now it looks like this:

Meal 1 – 10 egg whites 2 whole eggs 1.5 cups oats w/ 1 banana.

Meal 2 – 8oz chicken 12 oz red potato or 1.5 cups rice

Training – during training I sip on 2 scoops amino tone mixed with gatorade

Post-workout shake – 2 scoops Isotropic mixed with 60 carbs from gatorade

Meal 3 – 8oz chicken 12 oz red potato green veggie

Meal 4 – 8oz chicken 8oz sweet potato

Meal 5 – repeat meal 4

Meal 6 – 10 egg whites with 2 whole eggs or 2 scoops isotropic with PB.

Do you use supplements? If so, what do you recommend?

At the moment I amino tone, Iso tropic protein and resurrect pm  by RCSS.

Do you have post/pre-workout meals? What’s your favorite?

Pre training meal for me is 8-9oz chicken breast with 12oz red potato. My post workout meal is 8-9 oz chicken with faster digesting carbs like white rice.

How do you deal with things such as hunger and cravings?

I honestly never crave until like the final couple weeks out from a show . I just try to keep my mind on the prize because if I give in then that means I didn’t do all that i could have done to be my best.. If I get hungry any time during prep I sip on BCAA’S between meals.

Do you have any cheat meals?

I have 1-2 cheat meals per week one clean like sushi and the other dirtier like pizza or burgers.

What is your biggest motivation to get you back in the gym?

Failure and people talking crap saying I can’t do it. It fuels my fire in me.

If you could go back in time, what would you change in your training?

Not really much at all because everything that I have done has made my physique what it is today.. trial and error I learned over the years what to do and what not to do.

Any advice for beginners or anyone looking to get back into fitness?

I would tell them to start slowly back into it. Don’t rush things because if you do then your more likely to have an injury .. start with the basics and learn the fundamentals of training before trying to lift more weight then you can really handle.

What advice do you to anyone looking to lose weight in time for summer?

Eat clean and do your cardio!

Anything else you’d like to add?

Look out 2014 Big J is coming!!
