For this interview, Supplement Judge is very lucky and privileged to speak to Ronnie Coleman Signature Series‘ sponsored athlete Kevin Ofurum. In this interview we see what it takes to become a professional athlete and a chiropractor!
1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
My name is Kevin Ofurum. I have lived in Dallas since I was 13 years old, so I consider myself a Texan! My first show was in August 2000 at the Southwest Natural Classic where I placed 1st out of 17 competitors. I was hooked after that.
I am a chiropractor in the Dallas area. There I also hold Bachelor’s degrees in Human Anatomy and Biology
2. How long have you been training for?
I have been training for approximately 14 years.
3. How did you get started in training?
I first walked into a gym in 1999 when I was 25 years old, simply to improve my physique.
4. Who got you motivated to start training?
No one really. I pretty much decided to get into the gym to improve upon my physique.
5. What are your short and long term fitness goals?
Short term goal was to compete and be competitive on the National level; long term was to turn pro; both goals accomplished; now, I have set a goal to compete on the Olympia stage.
6. What workout routine has worked best for you?
Working out 5-6 days/week, with emphasis on legs 2x/wk has worked great to improve my physique.
7. Could you outline your basic daily diet?
Off-season: meal 1: 2 cups oatmeal, 6 egg whites; meal 2-5: 2 cups rice + 7-8oz chicken/fish; meal 6: 2 scoops isotropic max
8. Do you use supplements? If so, what do you recommend?
Yes; Amino-Tone, Vit. C, digestive enzymes, vit. D, Vit. E, creatine, glutamine
9. Do you have post/pre-workout meals? What’s your favorite?
No; simply follow my meal plan. However, intra-workout I use amino-tone and post workout I do use pro-antium immediately following my workout
10. How do you deal with things such as hunger and cravings?
In the off-season, I simply eat what I’m hungry for or crave
11. Do you have any cheat meals?
Yes; burgers, pizza, pasta, chinese food
12. What is your biggest motivation to get you back in the gym?
The hunger to be my best on stage and self-discipline
13. If you could go back in time, what would you change in your training?
I would focus more on my leg training routine much earlier in my training career
14. Any advice for beginners or anyone looking to get back into fitness?
Yes; stay focused, stay hungry, stay dedicated, stay consistent
15. What advice do you to anyone looking to lose weight in time for summer?
Work hard. Just don’t talk and fantasize about it, but do it; it takes work and effort
